Jean Raydell Houston, of Hemet, CA entered into eternal life on November 13, 2018 at the age of 65 after a well-fought battle with cancer. Born in 1953 to John (Jack) and Merlyn McKernan, she was raised in the quaint farm-town of Marcus, Iowa. The second of four children, Jean would often help out at her father's grocery store in town. She was a joyful and upbeat child, and had a positive impact on many in the community. A cheerleader and hardworking student, she had the honor of being chosen homecoming queen at the age of 17. Jean had a contagious smile and heart for others that would never be forgotten. After finishing high school in 1971, she went on to college in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she trained to become a legal secretary.
In 1973, she moved to San Francisco, CA and that is where she met the love of her life and husband of 40 years, Michael Houston. After a whirlwind romance, they married in 1976 and ended up settling down in the valley community of Hemet, CA where they raised their four children.
Jean worked for the HUSD maintenance department for 29 years, retiring in 2014. Her cheerful attitude and efficiency of skill was welcomed there. Everyone loved Jean! She will be dearly missed by her former co-workers.
In her free time, she loved to garden, read and share laughs with others. But her biggest passions in life were selflessly taking care of her kids and grandkids, and sharing her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jean was preceded in death by both her parents, and her husband Michael, in 2016. She is survived by her daughters Trinity Houston, Sara Houston-Serna (husband Anthony) and Kelly Houston-Mancilla (husband Victor); her son Dave Houston (wife Sabreena) her grandchildren Ashley, Cody, Lash, Remy, Elliot, Jasmine, Ariana, Anthony Jr., Desairee, Elena and Violet; and her great-grandchildren Vaida, Michael, and Abraham. She is also survived by her siblings Jody McKernan, Joel McKernan (wife Cindy), and Carol Lowery.
Memorial service for Jean will be held at Miller Jones Mortuary, 1501 W. Florida Ave., on November 20th at 1 pm, with reception to follow.
