Helen Howerton, age 95, passed away in Hemet on July 11, 2014. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She met the love of her life, Nathaniel “Phil†Howerton in Washington, D.C. during World War II and they were married there in 1944. Their son, David was born in Washington D.C. in 1945 and their daughter Diane was born in 1947 in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
They moved to Hemet in 1952 where Phil taught at Hemet High School and Helen became a Hemet USD school librarian.
They loved to travel and crossed the United States with the family in the summer of 1962 in an Airstream trailer, and later traveled in a motorhome and then a fifth wheel. In retirement, they were campground hosts in Alaska, and also in Yellowstone, the Tetons and Glacier National Parks.
Phil passed away in 2003. Helen is survived by her son David in Kent, Washington, and her daughter Diane in Riverside, CA. She is also survived by her grandsons Scott and Todd Mapes, and her great grandchildren, Madison and Mason Mapes and Zachary and Taylor Mapes.
Internment at Riverside National Cemetery will be private. Care provided by Miller-Jones Mortuary
