Andrew Scullion was born in West Orange, New Jersey, on December 7, 1930, to Michael and Florence Scullion. His family was living in America for a brief time. Known as Andy, his family left for England and he spent the rest of his years as a child and young adult being raised and educated in England. At the age of 18, Andy joined the American Army, 3rd Infantry Division, and headed off to the Korean War. He was very proud to serve and of his days in the Army and as a veteran as well. After his time in the army, Andy returned home to England, and, in 1954, he married the absolute love of his life, Peggy. Andy would speak of the many years they spent dancing together at the Empire Ballroom in New Brighton. Peggy was his dance partner then and in life. They were together for 62 years before she preceded him in death in 2014.
In their years together, Andy and Peggy had eight amazing children, four boys and four girls. He was a devoted father to all of his children (in order of age): Michael Scullion, Sandra Kunz, Debra Kelly, Andrew L. Scullion (deceased in 2004), Beverly Scullion, Christopher Scullion, Jennifer Dougan and Jeremy Scullion. His family was his claim to fame, which also includes 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren. and one great great grandchild.
Andy was proud of many things in his life. Not only his children and their children but also his years as a veteran and he continued to serve as a volunteer and work diligently in a variety of roles for the 3rd Infantry. Andy was instrumental in several fundraising efforts to have monuments installed at three national cemeteries in southern California, including Riverside National Cemetery, which represent the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, the Rock of the Marne.
Andy was described by his family as a 'lovable grouch," however, to them he was also an amazing dad and a special man. He was not only a protective father and granddad, but he was a gentleman, respected and admired by all who knew him. Andy was intelligent and was proud of being educated in England. He spoke often of his years in British schools and his fond memories of his boyhood days at Wallasey Grammar School. Not only did he have a sharp mind to the end, but he had a zest for life and a great sense of humor. Throughout his life some hobbies included swimming, dancing, writing and singing. In the last few years, people connected to Andy through his amazing voice as he performed with a local Hemet group, Seniors on Stage (SOS), for more than three years. His voice was incredible and one of a kind. Andy's spirit will live on in each of his children and grandchildren but he will be remembered, proudly and fondly, and as a man who would not give up a fight, even as he drew his last breath. He will truly be missed by all.
Interment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard Riverside, CA 92518, on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 9:30AM. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.miller-jones.com
