Helmi was born March 19, 1918, in Two Harbors, MN, to Victor and Elinore (Koskinen) Neuvonen. Her family moved to the Town of Spider Lake, Hayward in 1919. She attended Clear Lake School in the Town of Spider Lake and graduated from Hayward High School and Superior State Teachers College (UW-Superior). After receiving her teaching degree in 1938, she taught at Clear Lake and Hunter schools, was principal and upper grade teacher at New Post and Stone Lake Elementary Schools from 1938 - 1946. She also taught in Mellen and St. Croix Schools from 1946 – 1949. After raising her family she returned to teach during the 1970 – 1971 school year in the Title I program at Lake School, Hayward. After retiring from teaching, she worked several years at the Northern Lakes Co-op in the clothing department.
She was married to Fred Voight on May 26, 1949 and lived in the Town of Round Lake until 1995 when she moved to McFarland to be closer to her family. She was an Associate Member of Spider Lake Church and a member of McFarland Lutheran Church. She has spent the last 5 years at Harmony Assisted Living Center where she loved to play bingo and participate in other activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, her parents, a brother, Reino, and a sister, Viola (Harding) Emery.
She is survived by a son, Bruce (Jaclyn) Voight, McFarland, WI, a daughter, Linda (James) Wachholz, Montello, WI, five grandchildren, James (Elizabeth) Voight and Erica (Scott) Kramer, Madison, WI, Aaron and Leah Wachholz, Montello, and Sarah (Daniel) Kolander, Onalaska, WI, and three great-grandchildren, Cecelia Voight, Abbie and Riley Kramer. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives
