Ita Hershcovich Aber was born in 1932 in Montreal Canada, daughter of immigrants from Romania and Poland. She was the 3rd daughter and was followed by a younger brother. Ita spoke English, French, Hebrew and Yiddish. She learned fiber arts at home by making and fixing clothing and by making traditional Jewish ritual objects like challah covers. Ita had to go to work at an early age and because of her language skills landed a job at the Israeli consulate. She met Joshua Aber on a double date which ultimately led to 65 years of marriage. On the professional front, Ita was an artist and art historian who focused primarily on creating works of fiber art and on textile conservation. Her art works were displayed in many locations including the Israel Museum, the Brooklyn museum, the Yeshiva University Museum, the Mobile Museum of Art, the Smithsonian and others. In addition, Ita was an Art Curator at the Hudson River Museum and at the Hebrew Home in Riverdale. As a consultant in textile conservation, she worked with the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Jewish Museum and others when old Jewish textiles were uncovered. Ita was a founder of the Pomegranate Guild, and she wrote a book called The Art of Judaic Needlework. Ita and Josh were active members of the Riverdale Jewish Center and were closely involved in the founding of the SAR Academy. She is survived by three children (Mindy, Judah, Harry), 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Ita Aber was 93 years old.
A graveside service for Ita was held on Friday, April 18, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Cedar Park and Beth El Cemeteries, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652.
