Harry died peacefully at age 99.
He was the son of Feige Ruchel Goldstein and Natan Itzhak Berkowitz; grandson of William Goldstein and Esther Kleinman, and of Haim Berkowitz and Gitel Mermelstein.
He was married to Judith Goldstein for 73 years. He was father to Leslie Ben-Zvi and Renee MacInnes; grandfather to Liam Benzvi, Matthew Kudry, and Jillian Kudry; and father-in-law to Thomas MacInnes and Laura Ross.
After being liberated by the Americans on May 5, 1945, following a one-week death march from Auschwitz to Austria, Harry eventually ended up in Zeilsheim displaced person’s camp where he met his future wife, Judith. They each emigrated to the United States and were married on March 25, 1950. Following a brief career as a draftsman, Harry went into business for himself and spent the rest of his career owning Carvel ice cream stores and commercial real estate.
His hobbies included tennis and skiing, traveling, attending concerts and the theatre, and playing casino poker at the tables.
Harry loved his family and they loved him. He was generous, full of kindness, judged no one, and saw the goodness in all people. Truly, to know him was to love him.
A Graveside service for Harry will be held Sunday, September 10, 2023 1:00 PM at the Sharon Gardens Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, NY 10595.
