Bill was born March 7, 1930 to Cora Daugherty Owen and William Earl Owen of Pontotoc, MS. Bill graduated in 1948 from Pontotoc High and then joined the United States Air Force. He met Doris Hobbs while stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. They married April 3, 1953 and welcomed the apple of their eye, daughter Linda, a year later.
The Air Force gave the Owen family many adventures over the years and they called many places home – Texas, Alaska, and finally, Louisiana. Bill also did a tour in Japan, during which Doris & Linda stayed with family in Doris’ native North Carolina.
Bill was a pool shark, worked the Texas State Fair and the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament for years, loved boats, skiing, and swimming, and owned just about every size motor home made over the years. He and Doris enjoyed travelling around the country, later including their grandsons on the journeys.
When Bill retired from the Air Force, he went to work for the United States Postal Service. He retired from this second career on April 1, 1985.
Nothing gave Bill more joy than his family. He is survived by daughter Linda and son-in-law, Mike, grandsons David Humke and wife Lisa and Brian Humke and wife Desirae, and great-grandsons Coty Brower and Owen Humke. Also left to cherish his memory are nieces Julie Schafer and husband Steve, Pam Cornelius, Pat Bradshaw, Charla Greene, and Anna Bradshaw as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Doris, parents Cora and William, and brother Oliver “Bud” Owen and wife Mary Alice.
Bill was a kind and humble man. His final request was that family and friends would gather in his memory to share stories of his life. Please join us at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home, 601 Hwy 80 East, Haughton, LA 71037 on Saturday April 20, 2024 for visitation at 1:00 pm and celebration of life at 2:00 pm with burial immediately following in the Hill Crest Cemetery.
