HAUGHTON LA-Going Home services for Bro. Sherman Smith, 82, will be held at Wesley Chapel, 6018 Highway 80 Princeton, Louisiana on Monday July 30, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Diana E. Roberison officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Crest cemetery. The family will be receiving visitors on Sunday July 30, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Hill Crest Funeral Home.
Sherman was born March 24, 1930 in Haughton, Louisiana to the late R.T. and Mary Smith. He was the second oldest of seven children. Sherman accepted Christ at an early Smith Chapel C.M.E. Church. He was baptized by the Father, Son and Holy Ghost in 1972 at Allen Metropolitan C.M.E. of Chicago.
Sherman joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and after serving four years he moved to Chicago where he met his wife Leversia Smith, and married her on June25, 1955. From their union came two loving daughters Carolyn and Jeanette.
Sherman retired from General Motors- Electric Motor Division after 40 years. In his spare time and after retiring he loved to manicure his lawn and make things grow. He was passionate about his gardening so passionate that he grew vegetables for other people. He lived by a motto ”If I am able to help someone than my living shall not be in vain.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Johnny, Alex, R.T. Jr., Roy Lee and Lee Arthur Smith and a sister Pauline Lars.
He is survived by his devoted daughters, Carolyn Preston and Jeanette Brown; sisters, Lillie V. Reliford, Irma Ruffin (Johnny), Emma Strogen, Dazzaree Smith, Velma Walls (Willie), Lou Ella Barrett, Ida Pearl Smith and Betty Armwood (Sammy); a brother Clinton Smith (Caroline); grandchildren, Jamesa J. Jackson, Crystal E. Harrington (Jeffrey), Allen T. and Steven M. Brown; great- grandchildren, Elijah Emanual, Jaelin Harrington and Lylah Harrington; he also leaves behind to cherish his memory, Leversia Smith and special friends Cornelius Davis and Isaiah Brown.
Honoring Sherman as pallbearers will be, Ronald Reliford, Rick Strogen, Tommy Ruffin, Ralph Strogen, Patrick Lars and Joshua Jefferson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Matthew Smith, Cornelius Davis, Isaiah Brown and Hurdis Reed.
