Ruth was born in Dierks, Arkansas, on August 3, 1929, to A.W. Hill and Evva Langley Hill. She shared many happy memories of growing up in Dierks, a small town where everyone knew you and your family. She was an excellent student and graduated from Dierks High School in 3 years as Salutatorian. Ruth attended Centenary College and later LSU-Shreveport where she graduated as an adult with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Ruth worked for the Department of Public Welfare in Shreveport, LA, for over thirty years. Following her retirement from state government, she worked as a case manager at New Horizons Independent Living Center and at Lagniappe Hospital. She loved her co-workers and the clients and patients she served.
Ruth was an active member of First Baptist Church in Bossier City and later Bellaire Baptist Church, serving on numerous committees and teaching Sunday School for many years. She loved helping others and loved her church families.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and was close friends with some sorority sisters for over 50 years. She received many awards from her sorority as well as from New Horizons ILC and Lagniappe Hospital. She loved reading, gardening, watching LPB, and most of all, going to family get-togethers. She was an excellent cook, and her family loved their “Memaw.”
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Audie Walter Hill and Evva Langley Hill; stepmother, Eleanor Schlief Hill; brother, Charles Hill; and sister-in-law, Katherine Hill. She is survived by her husband of 13 years, Reggie Singleton; her brother, Lloyd Hill; sister-in-law, Louise Hill; stepsisters, Barbara Carter and Linda Hill; her daughter, Sherrie Ball Murphy and husband Ronnie; granddaughters, Vanessa Murphy Stott and Dana Murphy Hesson and husband Matthew; and five great-grandsons, who, along with Matthew Hesson, will serve as pallbearers: Travis Miller, Quentin Stott, Caleb Stott, Collin Hesson, and Cameron Hesson.
