PLAIN DEALING/BENTON-Mattie Raye O’Daniel Matlock passed away peacefully at Colonial Oaks on March 17, 2015. Services will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. Visitation will be held on Friday March 20, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Hill Crest Funeral Home.
Mattie was born on May 16, 1919 to John Henry (Jock) O’Daniel and Courtney Owens O’Daniel in Plain Dealing, LA. She is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Matlock and her parents, J. H. and Courtney O’Daniel, step-mother, Lydia Morgan O’Daniel, (Momma), who raised her from age two; brothers Alton, Elmer, Orland, Johnny, Cavett, Algy, Hershel and sisters, Sybil Akin and Ethel Davidson and granddaughter, Copia Westbrook.
She is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Matlock and her parents, J. H. and Courtney O’Daniel. She is survived by daughters Martha Matlock of Lake Charles, LA and June Carroll and husband Bob of Spring, TX, and son Homer Matlock and wife Alpha of Benton, LA; grandchildren Mark Fernandez (Ann), Greer, S.C., Jay Fernandez (Patsy), North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Libby Leone (Mark), Lake Charles, LA; Kerry Matlock (Karen), Plain Dealing LA, Gary Matlock (Donna), Benton, Caci Amaral (Stephen), Nantucket, MA, Colton Carroll (Amy), Katy, TX, Amy Maroney (Mike) Austin, TX; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mattie grew up in Plain Dealing, LA, and was educated in the Plain Dealing Schools. She lived in the community of Walkers’ Chapel near Plain Dealing many years before moving to Benton, LA in 1978.
She was a loving wife and devoted mother. She adored gardening along with her husband. The many flowers, fruit, and vegetables were always shared with family, friends, and neighbors. One year her yard won the Beautification Award from the Cypress Area Garden Club. She was blessed with a long life with a family who loved and honored her. She loved her daily Bible readings and had a total unwavering faith in God. She was quiet, gracious, and left behind a legacy of faith, hope, and love to those who survived her.
Pallbears will be Kerry Matlock, Gary Matlock, Garrett Matlock, Hunter Matlock, Mark Fernandez and Jay Fernandez.
The family wants to thank the staff at Colonial Oaks and Amedisis Hospice, and a special thanks to Chenita Miller and Stephanie Golden for their sweet and loving care.
The family also requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice.
