Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. with a graveside service following at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday December 4, 2010. Officiating will be Rev. Rocky Maddox. Jerry Jett who was affectionately known as "PaPa" to his family, entered into rest on December 1, 2010, to be reunited with his beloved wife, Janet Jett.
He was born in Empire, Alabama, the son of a coal miner. He left Empire to serve his country for twenty-years in the U.S. Air Force as a Security Policeman. During his years of service he received multiple meritorious coomendations for his counsel of servicemen during multiple deployments overseas. Both "PaPa" and these young men were away from home without their families. After his retirement from the USAF, he went to work at the United States Postal Service, for the next twenty years.
He met his beloved wife on a blind date in Las Vegas, Nevada while stationed at Nellis AFB. They were married for 51 wonderful years, traveling around the world while serving our country. During "retirement" they ran "Jett's Collectibles" their antique and collectible shop. He was a wonderful man to know, he loved life, antiquing, golfing, walking, talking, football, his precious Irish Setter "LADY" and most importantly, his family.
He was a devoted man that taught his family what unconditional love was all about as he cared for his ailing mother-in-law, brother-in-law and wife for so many years without uttering a complaint. He was, and is, our hero.
He was preceded in death by his parents August and Elsie Jett and brother, David Jett.
Those left to cherish his memory are daughters, Jamie Jett; Jackie Jett-Milam and husband Terry Milam; cherished grandson Logan McCole,; brother, Steve Jett; sisters, Cathy Jett and Tracy Carver, mother-in-law Veronica Dunn, brother-in-law Leland Dunn, nephews, Jonathan and Brian Jett, and his golfing partner and dear friend Ike Iacona. We will miss him tremendously. There is a void in our hearts that cannot be filled until we meet again.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Glenn Mills, Tracey Nolte, the nursing staff at Feist Weiller Cancer Center, and the nursing staff on the Oncology Unit for their loving care during this trying time. You made our journey easier. Special thanks to all the healthcare community at LSU Health Sciences Center for the support given to the family during "PaPa's" courageous battle with lung and bone cancer. We thank God for you every day because you made it easier for him. We will continue to thank God for you as you care for others.
