Irma L. Thornton passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Grace Home in Shreveport, LA. The family will receive friends at the Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on the following day, Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Buster Page will be officiating the service.
She was born in Minden, LA on January 1, 1916 and later moved to Delhi, LA. Mrs. Thornton attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA from 1933-1936. During that time she met her loving husband of 60 years, Mack William Thornton of Waverly, LA. They resided in Bossier City for fifty-five years.
Mrs. Thornton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bossier City for many years. She taught four year olds in Sunday School at F.B.C. for almost 25 years. She was a member of Bellaire Baptist Church at the time of her death. Mrs. Thornton was a substitute teacher at Airline High School for several years and also worked at Northwest State School in the Ambulatory Boys division for several years. She was a member of the Oriental Shrine of North America, Mesha Court #63 in Shreveport, LA. She also enjoyed being a member of the Civenett Club and the Friendship Club of Bossier City.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Mack W. Thornton; her parents, Mrs. Mattie Lena Knighton McKinnis and Eugene Canfield McKinnis and three brothers and two sisters and daughter, JoAnn Thornton Almond.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Thornton Ramsey and husband, Allan of Darien, IL. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Mike Almond and wife, Renea of Benton, LA, Clay Almond and wife, Terrie of Benton, LA, Wade Almond and wife Jennifer of Tampa, FL, Steve Ramsey and wife Alison of Naperville, IL, and Brad Ramsey and fiancé, Alyse of Lockport, IL; great grandchildren, Brandi St. Andre and husband Brian, Dustin Almond, Ariel Almond, Dani Brown and husband Jordan, Ricky Almond, Crystal Almond, Brady Almond, Brooke Almond, Everitt Ramsey, Laina Ramsey and Maddock Ramsey and great-great grandchildren, James David Almond, Jake St. Andre, Bella Brown and many nieces and nephews.
