HEFLIN, LA – A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Charles Thomas Sawyer will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jimmy West officiating. Inurnment will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Park.
Charles "Tommy" Sawyer 84, died Wednesday, February 28, 2017 at Promise Hospital in Shreveport, LA following a brief illness.
Charles was born in Taunton, MA on January 12, 1933. The military brought him to Bossier City, and he retired in Heflin. Tommy "Granddaddy Dozie" was a caring loving husband, grandfather and great grandfather. Tommy served twenty years in the United States Air Force with three tours to Vietnam. The Air Force awarded Tommy with the Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and Good Conduct Medal. He furthered his career at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center for twenty years, with an outstanding service record receiving numerous awards. After retirement, Tommy never stopped working with his hands, building model airplanes, model boats and HO train layouts. He was always working in the yard, building ponds and taking care of his animals. He lived life to the fullest and always had a big smile.
He was member of the Baptist Tabernacle Church in Sibley, Louisiana where he was called the “donut guy”. He made sure to bring coffee and donuts to all of his brothers and sisters in Christ every Sunday and Wednesday.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Johnnie Mae Sawyer and second wife, Ola Lee Sawyer.
Charles is survived by his sons, Thomas Michael Sawyer and wife Mary Ann, Paul Bradley Sawyer and wife Lorie and Stephen Duane Sawyer and his wife Debbie; daughter, Tammy Sawyer Grill and her husband Wayne; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and one on the way.
