He was born on August 28, 1958 in Harrisonburg and was the son of the late Harvey and Ava Burkholder Mongold.
John was very proud to say that he went to Waterman Elementary and he graduated from Harrisonburg High School. He proudly served his country in the US Marines. He was a member of Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Hose Co. #4 and part of Harrisonburg/Rockingham Search and Rescue. He retired from Walmart after many years of working.
John enjoyed collecting coins, Coca-Cola memorabilia, hiking, camping and was an avid reader of Stephen King’s novels.
He is survived by two daughters, Christine Mello and husband, Michael and Brandy Stone and husband, Daniel, all of Harrisonburg; their mother, Leslie Bailey; two sons, Jacob and Jonathan Mongold; their mother, Brandy Dimick; four grandchildren, Morgan, Connor, Cassidy and Cameron; a niece, Claudine Bevan and a great-niece, Brittany Bevan both of Pennsylvania.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Margaret Cassidy and an aunt, Ivy Painter, preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be held 1 pm, Friday, April 5, 2024 at Quantico National Cemetery.
