Frances was born January 29, 1925 in Norfolk, Virginia to Frances Dunn Leazar and Augustus Leazar. Her brother John was born two years later.
She attended Women’s College in Greensboro for two years and then worked in Florida as a weather observer for a military airport. After the war, she completed a degree at UNC-Chapel Hill in Theatre, focusing on scenic design and play-writing.
She married George Trammell in 1948 with whom she had four children.
She was a creative and joyous mother and a beloved grandmother, who could turn a walk around the block into an hour-long nature expedition. She was a life-long beauty-seeker and art-maker, working primarily in oil paints but also in many media including ceramics, textiles, stained glass, sewing, floral arrangement, cake-decorating, basketry and jewelry-making. Anything that could be made, she made it. She was active in churches wherever she lived, including, most recently Grace Covenant in Harrisonburg. Frances loved travel and enjoyed mission trips to Israel, Poland, Kenya, China, and Central America. One of her fondest memories was smuggling bibles into mainland China in the early 1990’s. In her final years, she took great pleasure in her grand-cat Posh and grand-dog Meadow.
Frances will be remembered as a smart, strong woman whose curiosity, capacity for love, and enthusiasm for life lit up the space around her.
She is survived by son Roy Trammell and daughter-in-law Brenda (Beaverton, OR), son Bob Trammell (Harrisonburg), daughter Kate Trammell (Harrisonburg), daughter Susan Trammell (Archer, FL), grandchildren Jeremy Trammell (Portland, OR), Larkin O’Hara (Brooklyn, NY) and Iris O’Hara (Denver, CO.) a niece Nell McMurtry (Brevard, NC) and a nephew John Leazar (Texas).
