A daughter of the late William and Janet Snyder McCullough, she was born on Aug. 18, 1956, in the Bronx, N.Y.
She graduated from Longwood University in Farmville, Va., with a BS degree in Education. Mrs. Canter was a member of Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder. She was a soccer/cross-country mom, was Cub Master for Pack 40 for several years and was an avid skier and bridge player.
On Aug. 11, 1979, she married Dr. John Canter, who survives her.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Walter Canter and William Canter, both of Harrisonburg; three brothers, James of Sandy Hook, Conn., Wayne of Penfield, N.Y., and Keith of Brookfield, Conn.; four nieces and seven nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Evans officiating.
