Our father was born on Abe Lincoln’s birthday February 12 in the year of 1927. He is with his dear wife Miriam and daughter Janis in heaven now. He lived in his own home until recently when he moved to Landis Homes. They had three children, Janis (deceased) wife of Sam Hoffman, Nancy wife of Cornelius Swingler and Michael husband of Kathy Keeney. He was a graduate of Juniata College and served in the Navy from 1945-1946 as a control tower operator. He worked for Sperry Ford New Holland in data processing and computer systems support retiring in 1991 after 30 years of service.
He absolutely loved bike riding with mom on their tandem bike and later rode solo. He said it wasn’t a bike ride if it was under 30 miles and he rode well into his 80s. Dad and mom loved their children and encouraged them in education, music and sports. They were supportive and attended all their children’s functions. He was an active member of Lititz Church of the Brethren singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and went on mission trips to Africa. He loved to sing in quartets traveling around to different churches. When he was young, he and his siblings would sing in front of their church. He enjoyed playing the trombone in his younger years.
He was a very good cruciverbalist and was solving his word jumbles, cryptograms and crossword puzzles til the end. He was a man of few words and was known for his quick wit. He always cheered for the underdog and was always there to help family, friends and work colleagues in time of financial and spiritual needs. They enjoyed family vacations to the seashore and mountains. Walter and Miriam enjoyed life in Neffsville for over 60 years and took trips to China, Hawaii and Europe. They are also survived by their beloved grandchildren, Eric (Christie) Hoffman, Greg (Heidi) Hoffman, Jenna (Nathan) Ginder and Lindsay (Parke) Oehme, fourteen great grandchildren and his dear sister Miriam Musselman of Cashtown PA.
Celebration of Life service for Walter will be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren on Saturday October 26th at 11am at the Lititz Church of the Brethren at 300 W Orange St, Lititz, Pa 17543. Visitation at 10:30 and a light luncheon to follow.
