Thomas Alan Gallup, 76, of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Homeland Center.
Born July 6, 1947, in Williamsport, Tom was the son of the late Robert J. and Betty L. (Rechel) Gallup.
Surviving is his life partner of more than 30 years, David M. Colestock; his son Thom Gallup and wife Ingrid; his brother, Bob Gallup and wife Ginny; grandchildren Ashlee, Lilith, and Anna; and several nieces and nephews.
A consummate musician, Tom was a gifted vocalist, pianist, organist, and flutist. A graduate of Mansfield University, he was passionate about teaching, performing, and conducting.
Tom was first and foremost a music educator, teaching vocal music at Warrior Run, Williamsport, and Redland High Schools. He led many high school musical productions, and several of his choirs were invited to perform at state music conferences. Many of his students were influenced by his musicianship and pursued their own careers in music education, music performance, theater, and composition.
While Tom was not one to talk about his faith, he expressed his deep devotion through his passion for sacred music, from grand oratorios to beautiful hymn tune arrangements for piano or choir. He served as organist and choir director in several churches in the Williamsport area and at Calvary United Methodist Church in Harrisburg.
Tom was a musical force in the community as well, conducting and performing in vocal and wind ensembles and choirs from Williamsport and Lewisburg to Susquehanna University and Harrisburg. He was a presence on stage and in the orchestra pit in theaters from Central Pennsylvania to Cape May, New Jersey.
When not performing, Tom enjoyed meals with friends and family, attending concerts and musical theater, playing and napping with his many dogs, and relaxing at the Rehoboth and Cape May beaches.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 310 N. 3rd Street, Harrisburg. A music prelude will precede the service and a reception will follow. Free parking is available on the street using the ParkMobile app with the code LUVHBG, or in the South Street Parking Garage.
