Robert Alan Mills, 86, a lifelong resident of Harrisburg died Sunday, August 4, 2024, at Messiah Lifeways. Bob was born January 15, 1938, a son of Clifford E. Sr. and Rose (Lanza) Mills who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Mills; 2 brothers, David G. Mills (Nancy) and Clifford E. Mills Jr.; brother-in-law, Laurence R. Brown; niece; nephew; grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and cousins.
A graduate of the former John Harris High School, Bob received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University in 1959. (Delta Tau Delta). Juris Doctorate Degree from Dickinson School of Law (Carlisle Campus) in 1966. He graduated second in his class and was a member of the Board of Editors, Dickinson Law Review, Moot Court Board, Corpus Juris Society and Woolsack Society.
Upon graduation from college, he was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served on active duty in the Western Pacific from 1959-1961. He remained a member of the Naval Reserve and retired in 1980 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Bob's legal career began in 1966 and was spent entirely with the Harrisburg law firm of McNees, Wallace and Nurick. He became a partner in 1972 and retired as Senior Partner in 2003. He specialized in business and trade associations, nonprofit and charitable organizations, and related corporate and legislative practice. He was a member of various charitable and nonprofit boards and committees. Specifically Harrisburg YMCA (Recipient: Distinguished Service Award, (1933); Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Regional Chambers (Vice Chairman, Government Subcommittee); Pennsylvania Alliance of Association Advancement (Recipient: Award in Excellence, 1992); Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations; and Pennsylvania Association for Government Relations.
He was a member of the Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations.
Upon retirement he and Mary traveled extensively both in this country and abroad. Travel, reading, sports and the Harrisburg YMCA were his primary avocations.
Bob's unique and highly personalized fitness regimen at the Y was incomparable.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Friday, August 9, 2024 at the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick, 212 State St., Harrisburg. Burial will be in Paxtang Cemetery. A visitation will be from 9:00 AM Friday until the time of the service at the Cathedral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisburg Catholic Elementary School, 225 State St., Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to your favorite charity in Bob's name.
