Born in Louisville, KY on December 4, 1929, Robert was the son of Henry Lyons and Mary Theresa Charlton.
Robert graduated from Saint Vincent High School in 1948. He then attended Georgetown University where he graduated in 1952 from the school of foreign service, while remaining an undefeated member of the boxing team. This was a sport he continued as part of his daily regiment until he was 87, and passed on to his children and grandchildren. Robert went on to be a very successful businessman in the steel and aluminum industry and became president of American Steel at the age of 34. Eventually, he started Consulting Associates and served as an executive consultant and CEO turning around challenged companies across multiple industries.
Robert’s greatest accomplishment was his family. He loved them and served them up until his death. He lived the vocation of Father and Husband, taking both roles seriously, and always being focused on his wife, children, and grandchildren until the end. Robert was also a member of the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community, where he served and supported for many years and was able to attend Mass celebrated in the form he loved.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Mary C. Robinson of Duncannon, wife of Gerald, and four sons: Robert Charlton, husband of Beth Ann, Thomas Charlton, husband of Joanna, Henry Charlton, husband of Tara, and, youngest son Patrick Charlton. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Carroll, and 19 grandchildren.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 11AM at Mater Dei, (previously St. Lawrence Church) 110 State Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101. Family and friends can extend their condolences and well wishes to the family on Nov 13, starting from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at the Church before the funeral Mass. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Robert’s memory to the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community at 110 State Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101.
