Robert Thomas Burrows, Jr. passed away on October 1, 2024, at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Born on May 4, 1941, Robert's life was marked by his calm demeanor creative spirit, and exceptional storytelling abilities, traits that endeared him to many. He was deeply loved.
Robert served honorably in the US Army from 1959 to 1962, as an intelligence specialist. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, WV where he earned his BS in Psychology, to be followed by a Master’s in Counseling from Shippensburg State College. His career spanned significant roles at Shippensburg State College and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, where he left a lasting impact through his dedication and insight.
A true artist at heart, Robert reveled in supporting his grandchildren's activities and was famously known for his elaborate birthday cakes and Halloween costumes. He loved traveling across the US with his bride to visit friends and family and enjoyed trips with friends Marcia and Dave LaBonte and Maxine and Ron Ordway, making memories and enjoying their friendships. He enjoyed watching game shows and old westerns from his favorite recliner and Steelers games with his son. He loved experimenting with new recipes, and his keen observations of people and nature filled his life and the lives of those around him with joy and inspiration.
Robert was a cherished member of his family, survived by his wife of 58 years, Grace Burrows; precious sisters, Miriam Roberts (Charles), and Mary Ali (Joseph) and sister in-law, Jan Burrows (Rick); his children, Erin Gick (Dale), Sean Burrows (Alyssa), and Kerri Burrows (Todd Hardin); and treasured grandchildren, Sierra Hardin, Reese Gick, Justin Gick, Carolyn Hardin, River Burrows, and Teagan Burrows; and many nieces and nephews who will all hold his memory dear. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert T. Burrows and Rozella Burrows; brother, Richard Burrows; and his beloved cat, Dusty. Robert’s life was marked by a profound ability to love and nurture those around him.
A service celebrating Robert's life will be held at Messiah Methodist Church, Shippensburg, on October 14, 2024 at 11:00am officiated by dear friend Rev. Marian Hartman. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SPO Shippensburg Produce and Outreach, at 130 Penn St, Shippensburg, PA 17257 an organization that provides food to the elderly. His legacy will continue to influence and inspire, just as his life did.
