Born on June 4, 1930, in Montclair, NJ, Ken was the youngest of Claude and Rhena Miller's five children. Ken's parents emigrated from Jamaica in the early 1920s and worked hard to afford a comfortable home and college education for each of their children.
Ken attended Montclair High School and graduated from Alfred University with an Associate’s degree in Diesel Mechanics. Ken was drafted into the Korean War and served in the US army for two years as a driver for Counter Intelligence in France.
When he returned from France, Ken dated and married Vilma ("Vicky") Romain of Brooklyn, New York, in 1954. They remained committed to one another for 57 years until Vicky's death in 2012. Ken and Vicky had two children, Doug and Diane.
Ken was devoted to his family and was close to his three brothers and sister as an adult. After his father died in 1964, Ken called his mother every day. He loved extended family gatherings, especially July 4th picnics at his sister's house. He was beloved by his many nephews and nieces, his children, and his grandchildren.
Ever the loyal friend, Ken maintained strong connections with childhood friends until death, especially his best friend of 80+ years, Jack Sewall.
Ken and Vicky were generous and hospitable. Ken enjoyed making food for neighbors and hosting family. Visiting grandchildren could be sure to count on his hearty breakfasts.
Ken worked at Champlain, Koppers, and Falcon Safety Products as a purchasing manager, and as a maintenance manager at TriChem. He was loved by his fellow workers. Even though he was in management, he frequently walked through the shop to greet the factory workers and share a kind word.
Ken and Vicky lived frugally, and Ken would service and repair their cars himself. He was handy with fixing things and home maintenance. In addition to building a treehouse for his grandchildren, Ken helped with home school projects.
After retirement, Ken and Vicky moved to Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1998. They enjoyed playing pinochle with neighbors and watching the local high school football team.
Ken not only took meticulous care of his cars, home, and yard, he often helped neighbors with their yard work.
An avid exerciser, Ken visited his local gym early in the morning three days a week until he was 87.
For many years at Christmas, Ken made his own chocolate candies (in “Ken's Kandy Kitchen”) and delivered boxes of them to every family member and many friends.
Throughout Vicky's 13-year journey with Parkinson's and later Alzheimer's, Ken was her steadfast caregiver. When he could no longer care for her at home, Ken visited Vicky every day for the last four years of her life until she died March 17, 2012.
As a widower, Ken lived alone until 2017, when he moved into a new home in Lititz, PA, with his daughter Diane. In 2019, he moved into the Landis Homes retirement community in Lititz, PA, before a final move to Cross Keys Village in New Oxford, PA, to be near his son Doug, in August 2024.
Ken was predeceased by his loving wife, Vicky; his parents, Claudius and Rhena Miller; his siblings, Claude Miller, Don Miller, Wentworth Miller, and Ethel Henderson; his sisters-in-law, Marie, Marian, Lorraine, and Judy; his brothers-in-law Hank and Joel; and his nephews, David and Wentworth Jr.
Ken is survived by his sister-in-law Polly; his two children and their spouses, Doug (Barb) Miller of New Oxford, PA, and Diane Miller (Paul Gundrum) of Manheim, PA; his eight grandchildren and their spouses, Seth Miller, Charlotte Longenecker, Steven Miller, Tom Sanfilippo, Sara Williams, Gabrielle McKee, Susanna Spurgeon, and Sharon Domanski; eighteen great-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews.
Ken's life will be celebrated on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601, officiated by Rev. John Fickett.
