Josephine Carmel Caloiero “Jobee” “Zitz” Barnes, of Lower Paxton Township, passed away on January 21, 2021, at the age of 92 years. She was born in Luzzi, Cosenza, Province of Calabria, on September 12, 1928, and immigrated to the United States on September 12, 1935, via Ellis Island, when she was 7 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Eugenio and Anna (Giorno) Caloiero, her brother Joseph & sister-in-law Sophia Caloiero, and a nephew, Joseph Eugene Caloiero. She is survived by one nephew, Richard Steven Caloiero (Cheryl), one niece-in-law, Vicki Caloiero, four great nephews, one great niece, 2 great great nephews, and 3 great great nieces.
Josephine was a graduate from Harrisburg Catholic High School (Bishop McDevitt), class of 1947, and was chairperson of the class reunions. She volunteered for many years on the Gala Committee, was a charter member of the Legacy and Leadership Groups, and supported many other campaigns.
She retired from AMP, Inc, as a product manager assistant after working in sales and marketing for 37 ½ years. She was Past President and active board member of AMPRA (Retiree’s Association). She was a member and past president of Hershey Italian Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and an active member and volunteer of Holy Name of Jesus Church as a Lector, and served on the Pastoral Council for many years, as well as various organizations and committees of many fundraising activities within various churches of the diocese. She was a member of the auxiliary of Our Lady of the Poconos in Mt. Pocono, PA, where she served as the co-coordinator of the annual women’s retreat of the Harrisburg Diocese for 35 years. She was a member of the Ellis Island Foundation, Heatherfield Community Association as a former welcoming committee chairperson, minority inspector of the 23rd precinct of Dauphin County for many years, a founding sponsor of the Flight 93 National Memorial, and participated in the local tri-county and Shippensburg Senior Games, winning medals in Bocce and darts. She was a gold card member of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate, and a member and supporter of various charitable organizations.
Josephine enjoyed traveling, especially to see her beloved Philadelphia Eagles, and was a season ticket holder for many years. She loved reading novels and going to weekly movies with her special friends.
Services and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery will be private.
