Born 4/12/1922 to John Gross and Cora Corman Shook of Spring Mills, John was in the Class of 1939 from Gregg Township Vocational School and a 1942 graduate of Penn State. He served in Germany during WWII with the 138th US Army Evacuation Hospital. After completion of his V.M.D at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1948, John opened his own large animal practice in Spring Mills. He then moved into regulatory service, where his life's work focused on the control and/or eradication of such animal diseases as hog cholera, brucellosis, tuberculosis, avian influenza, etc. John served as the State Veterinarian of Pennsylvania, and later the State Veterinarian of Maryland as well. He was a former President and long time Treasurer for the US Animal Health Association. He had a passion for golf and dachshunds. John was preceded in death by wife Jean Watts Shook as well as brothers Nevin and Justin, and is survived by son John C. (and wife Sandy) of Spring Mills, son Terry C. (and wife Dawn) of Annville, 3 Grandsons John S., Todd A. (and wife Maryann) and Neil C. Shook, and 2 Great-granddaughters Teresa and Taylor Shook.
