He was born in Mapleton Depot, PA on February 19, 1930, the son of the late Charles Alfred and Anna Sylvania (Calderwood) Shoop.
James was a graduate of the Mt. Union Area High School and was a member of the Alumni Association. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid baseball player in his hometown of Mapleton Depot and went on to be a pitcher in Japan for the U.S. Army. In 1985, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service after over 30 years of service as a letter carrier. He was a member of the NALC for more than 50 years.
His wife, Patricia Elaine (Free) Shoop preceded him in death.
Surviving is his daughter, Diane Elaine Shoop of Harrisburg; his son, James Edward Shoop, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl (Boyd) of Newbury Park, CA; his grandson, Joshua Thomas Shoop; his granddaughter, Brianna Elise Shoop; and his long-time family friend, Lois Wiley of Harrisburg. He loved and cherished his faithful feline companion, Rascal.
He was preceded in death by his brother, J. Robert Shoop and sisters, Geraldine Brumbaugh and Leah Ross.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015 at the Zimmerman-Auer Funeral Home, Inc., 4100 Jonestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17109. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
