Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Paul Burkholder and Vacy (Flick) Herr. A graduate of Penn State University and a member of Alpha Zi Delta sorority, she worked as a registered medical technologist and certified laboratory specialist in cytogenetics until she retired in 1987.
As a medical technologist, Helen set up two clinical laboratories for private physicians in Florida and Media, PA. From 1959 to 1966, she was the blood bank supervisor at Lancaster General Hospital. Helen worked for 9 years at John Hopkins Hospital in the division of medical genetics as a Cytogenetic Laboratory Supervisor. While working at John Hopkins, she traveled to Tunisia, North Africa under the auspices of Project Hope to teach cytogenetics at the University Hospital in Tunis. She also supervised the cytogenetics laboratories at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Alfred I. DuPont Institute, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
After retiring, Helen remained active by volunteering for 10 years at Lancaster County Office of Aging and worked part-time for Nurses Available. Her activities included the Senior Citizen Bowling League, Silver Threads and AARP. She was an ardent bridge player, birdwatcher and an amateur photographer of waterfowl. Helen was a member of First Reform Church United Church of Christ, Lancaster.
Helen was the last of her immediate family. A private burial will be held at the Memorial Garden of the First Reform Church United Church of Christ, Lancaster.
