Jean was born in Duryea, Pennsylvania, the only child of the late Genevieve and Joseph Kulas.
She is survived by her two sons from her 30-year marriage to the late George Jacoby: David (Esther) and Michael (Pam). Jean was thrilled when both sons and daughters-in-law moved to her community several years ago, after their retirement. Jean has two granddaughters Katie and Dani.
Jean spent over 20 years as a Senior Secretary with the Du Pont Engineering Department at the Louviers building in Delaware, retiring in November 1991. She served as a volunteer for many years. This included working as an aide at the Emily Bissell Hospital, and as a Crisis Intervention Counselor with Contact Delaware. Jean also spent time teaching remedial reading to children.
Described by her friends as “classy and sassy”, Jean enjoyed traveling, seeing Broadway shows, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed counted cross-stitch embroidery and created dozens of beautiful gifts for family and friends. Her elaborate afternoon “high tea parties” were appreciated by everyone. Jean was a big fan of the Philadelphia Phillies for most of her life. In her later years, she spent most of her time with her best friend and companion, the late Ashley Speakman.
Jean will be buried at a private service in Wilmington, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean’s name can be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601.
