

Frederick H. Stier, Jr., 81, of Columbia, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday August 31, 2014 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Susan Stier. He will be remembered for his gentleness and good humor.
Born on July 13, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA, Fred was the son of the late Frederick H. and Elizabeth R. Stier.
He was a graduate of Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and served in in the US Army National Guard during the Korean War. He had a long and successful career in trucking and materials distribution. He was a member of numerous professional organizations throughout his career. He was a member of the Lancaster Historical Society and volunteered at the Lancaster Historical Society, The Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission and the Lancaster County Prison.
Also surviving are two sons: Michael Stier and David Stier, both of New York City , and David’s wife, Reed Elfenbein, three stepchildren: Joseph Bowman and Bert Bowman of Red Lion, PA, and Stacey Bowman of Apollo Beach, FL, and five grandchildren: Gabi, Tommy, Lillie, Joe, and Grace.
Fred had many hobbies and interests throughout his life including model trains, antiques restoration, family geneology, and history of the American South. He had an enduring passion for the music of Jazz which he shared with enthusiasm with his two sons. Fred played a variety of musical instruments including drums and piano. He began performing in jazz bands while in High School and continued to perform as a side career for most of his adult life.
