Dorothy R. Stevenson, 87, of Lancaster, died on December 12, 2012 at her home, where she had lived for over seven years. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Stevenson who shared 58 years of marriage with her. Born April 22, 1925 in Tiffin, Ohio she was the daughter of Pearl and John L. Raines. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1947 with a degree in Business Administration. She worked for Proctor and Gamble as a market researcher; First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster as Director of Christian Education; Lancaster Community Action Program as Associate Director of Planning; Governor's Council for Human Services as Field Coordinator for the HUD/Model Cities Grant; Educational Projects, Inc. as Staff Associate of Pennsylvania Day Care Project; and Community Action Program of Lancaster County as Director of Planning and Evaluation.
Her volunteer efforts included serving on the board of the Day Care and Child Development Council of America, Millersville College Early Childhood Study Group, National Association for the Education of Young Children, and Family Planning Council of South Central Pennsylvania. She and her late husband Robert also volunteered at the Hospice of Lancaster County and as reading tutors at John Price School. She and her late husband approached world travel as a student entering a vast classroom to explore different cultures in 21 countries. These many trips were often shared with their family and close friends. She held memberships in the Lancaster County Historical Society and played in several duplicate bridge groups. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for approximately 60 years where she served as a deacon and taught Sunday school. Surviving are two sons, John and his wife, Kathy; and granddaughter, Erin of Canadian Lakes, Michigan; Philip of San Mateo, California; daughter-in-law, Phoebe Hsu Stevenson; grandson, Andrew and son-in-law, Don Rounds of Bethesda, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and two sons, Mark and David, and her brother Paul Raines.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, December 29th, 11:00 am, at First Presbyterian Church, 140 East Orange Street. The family will receive friends following the service in Esbenshade Hall where a luncheon will be served.
