David L. Crawford, of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2024. He lived a humble, honest, and honorable life for 93 beautiful years. Dave was born in Harrisburg, PA, to Robert and Ella Crawford, and is preceded in death by his parents and seven older siblings and one younger sister. As the second youngest of nine children, Dave quickly learned to love people and the life around him. He appreciated the simple joys and often looked forward to his beloved mother’s hand rolled sand tarts, fishing with his brothers, and picking berries for pie with his sisters. His love of football led him to proudly play for John Harris High School, where he later graduated in 1950.
The joy of his life was just beginning when he attended Senior prom one beautiful evening. Dave proposed to his high school sweetheart, Virginia Crawford (Gher), and the couple quickly became inseparable until Dave’s final day. During their amazing and admirable 72 years of marriage, they had two children David A. (Angela) and Diane (Lynn Bias). Their legacy of love grew as their family expanded to 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Dave preceded them all in death and left a lasting impact on all their lives.
Dad/Pap will forever be remembered for the many family trips to the beach, weekends at the campground, his passion for animals, and love of children, serving as Santa for the less fortunate, and his unconditional love and support for his family.
Dave gave selflessly to his country and community every day of his life. Corporal David Crawford served in the Korean War from 1952-1954, where he supplied ammunition to the front lines. After returning home, he found joy in working as a Store Manager for Weis Markets for 35 commendable years. Long after retirement and service to his nation, Dave continued to brighten the world around him by offering a hand around the neighborhood, a friendly smile, and honest hospitality anytime someone was in need.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 10, 2024 in the Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing will be from 10:00 AM Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s honor can be made to the Humane Society of Harrisburg or Hospice of Central PA.
Psalm: 23. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
