He was born June 27, 1922, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Thomas and Alma Hockady Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. In his early years, he worked at a saw mill with his brothers. He was employed at Sheffield Pallet, Mocksville, and was a tobacco farmer. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, chairman of the deacon board, a Sunday school teacher, and choir director.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Helen Joyner Smith, on October 20, 1999, whom he married on November 7, 1942; two brothers, Thomas and John Roy Smith (Gwen); a sister, Inez Renegar (Odell); and a daughter-in-law, Dianne Anderson Smith.
Clinton is survived by two daughters, Karen Smith and Luane Williard (Johnny); a son, Gordon Smith, all of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Laura Williard of Statesville, Chad Smith (Nicole) of Clemmons, Jonette Poole (Matthew) of El Paso, TX, and J.C. Williard of Mocksville; five great-grandchildren, Alexander and Augusta Smith of Clemmons, Hunter, Hayden, and Houston Poole of El Paso, TX; and two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Smith of Harmony and Hazel Cooke (Leon) of Yadkinville.
Funeral services celebrating Clinton’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Rock Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hedgecock and Dr. Jesse Stroud officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Rock Spring Baptist Church of Harmony, and at other times will be at the residence.
