Bill M. Smith, 89, of Harlan, Ind., passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at his home with his family by his side. Born November 23, 1925 in Oakland City, Ind., he was the only son of the late Elmer L. and Opal B. (Broshears) Smith. Bill was a 33rd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and a graduate of Purdue University School of Pharmacy. Bill was also an active member of Harlan United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ruth M. (Upperman) Smith of Harlan, Ind.; two daughters; one son-in-law; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00pm at Harlan United Methodist Church, 16434 IN-37, Harlan, Ind., with calling one hour prior, Pastor Robert Kloepping officiating. Calling will also be held Friday, October 2, 2015 from 2-3pm & 6-7pm at Hockemeyer Funeral Home, 17629 S.R. 37, Harlan, Ind., with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:00pm. Burial at Montgomery Cemetery, Oakland City, Ind. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
