Roy was 73 years of age, born on January 15, 1944, in Spur, Texas. He was one of five children born to Neal and Elvena McCormick. At the age of 9, he moved with his family to the small farming community of Armona, California, where he met his future wife of 52 years, Naomi (Nickell) McCormick.
At the age of 17, Roy enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Communication Radioman during the Vietnam War. Roy was especially proud of his service to his country. It was during this time he married his wife and started a family. After his service in the Navy, Roy worked for Pacific Bell Phone Company for several years. Eventually returning to his military roots, he went to work for the Lemoore Naval Base as a Maintenance Foreman where he would retire.
Roy was known for his generosity, adventurous spirit and zest for life. He enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, fishing, scuba diving, photography, building and flying radio remote control airplanes and even obtained his private pilot’s license taking family and friends on daring adventures in the sky. He especially enjoyed cooking and would often prepare food at The Episcopal Church of the Savior Soup Kitchen in Hanford. He is best remembered as a loving father, devoted husband, and someone who would always go the extra mile.
Roy will be greatly missed by his wife Naomi; his five children: Sandy and Tom Bettencourt; Sherrie and Andre Vidaurri; Russell McCormick; Brittany and James Schreyer; and Breanne McCormick. His surviving siblings: Wanda and Louie Garcia, Eddie and Penny McCormick. His five grandchildren: Amanda and John Chapman, Nickolas Vidaurri, Elena Vidaurri, Emilie McCormick, Devyn McCormick and four great grandchildren: John John Chapman, Jace Schreyer, Jeremy Schreyer, and Zane McCormick, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Roy was preceded in death by two brothers David McCormick and Kenneth McCormick, Daughter in law Beebe McCormick and grandson Jeriko Vidaurri.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, April 21, 2017 at People’s Funeral Chapel, 501 North Douty Street, Hanford, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Grangeville Cemetery in Armona. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday April 20, 2017 at Peoples Chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
