Vernie, son of Vernie and Wilma Boyd, was born in Besoco, WV, on August 1, 1938, as one of six children. He was married to Patsene Gaile Dunn in Sophia, WV, on January 30, 1960. Last January, they celebrated their golden 50 year anniversary. Vernie and Pat committed to a life of service in the U.S. Air Force for 31 years (1955-86), followed by 9 years (1986-95) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In his Air Force career, he and his family lived in Arizona, California, Indiana, Mississippi, South Dakota, Virginia, England, Germany, Spain and Thailand. He was also a realtor part-time at Poquoson Realty for several years. He was a member of Willoughby Chapel, where he served as a deacon. He was known for his dedicated involvement in church activities, commitment to his family, love of wood-working, and he was an avid gun enthusiast.
Vernie is survived by his wife, Patsene; four children, Laura Brown (husband Lyndon), Deborah Kinney (husband Jim), LeeAnn McNeil (husband John), and Vernie (wife Kerry); eight grandchildren, Christina, Fallon, David, Meaghan, Heather, Garrett, Christian and Connor; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Eric and Chase; and siblings, Barbara, Newton "Jack", Marie, Faye and Rosemary.
The viewing will be hosted on Friday, December 17, 2010 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home and open to the public from 7pm to 8pm. The funeral service will also be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 1pm. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
