Daphne and boys,

Sam, John Michael and I were so very sorry to hear of Troy’s passing just yesterday.  I loved working with Troy when he taught at Bethel and providing resources for him after he taught in Northern Virginia.  I appreciated his views on science and environmental issues and welcomed the opportunity to talk with him.  When Troy participated in the HCS H.E.L.P. (Hampton Environmental Literacy Program) I was the staff member tasked with keeping up with him.  We would be on a field trip and he would disappear, only to be found later talking to someone to learn more or doing his own exploration!  What a wonderful mind and heart he had.

Deepest sympathy on the loss of Troy.  
I had the honor of serving on the City Of Hampton Wetlands Board with Troy for several years.  During that time, I could always count on him to thoughtfully consider situations and make decisions that best supported our mission.  I- and our community—will truly miss his dedication and stewardship.  Rest in Peace, Troy. 

Daphne, and Boys; my deepest apologies on your loss. Troy remained a good friend to me even when I relocated from Hampton (which he helped) and when he moved. He let me know what he was up against and we talked often. I am so saddened with this loss.

Our deepest condolences to the Family of Troy Thompson.  Troy and his family have been a part of our dental practice for years and we shall truly miss his conversation and exceptional personality in our practice.

I met Troy Renn Thompson, the first day of first grade. Troy was comfortable with who he was, even at a young age, which made him easy to get along with. He would state interesting facts on a diverse set of topics, which continued throughout his life. Living about a mile apart, we became friends and spent many a day in the great expanse of his back yard observing any manner of flora and fauna. We attended Armstrong Elementary, Thorpe Jr. High and Hampton High School together, generally orbiting the same sun. We both had paper routes. Somehow, after high school, we both ended up working in the same department at the Newport News Shipyard, as Sheet Metal Apprentices. As life accelerated, our paths diverged and Troy began his college career at Old Dominion University. I would stop by his house whenever I came back in town. He would greet me the same way every time and inevitably, would invite me in and offer me a bottle of  ice cold Coca-Cola out of the fridge. In the early days, they were returnable glass bottles. We always end up discussing some topic of interest, with Troy sharing facts that I had no idea as to where they came from. As the years moved on, we both settled down into lives of marriage and families but always stayed in touch, particularly after the advent of the mobile phone in the mid-eighties. We'd talk on the phone, sharing our life challenges, victories and major events in life. We spoke, particularly around election time. Troy was my resident Virginia naturalist. I could take a picture of any bird, snake, fish, animal, fungi or plant and he would inevitably give me the scientific name, its habitat, what made it special and somehow would include some little known fact, as “icing on the cake.”

Troy has always been a loyal, caring friend and I am the better for his life long friendship. Troy was my Best Friend.

Rest in Heaven Troy. You fought bravely till the end. We will miss your quiet, thoughtful, and loving demeanor. I won't have no one answering the phone calls and telling on Daphne when she's trying to screen her phone calls🙏❤️
