Col. Robert B. Bennett, Sr., age 95, passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at The Chesapeake. Mr. Bennett was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 27, 1916. He was raised in Alliance, Ohio and had been a resident of Virginia for 54 years.
Robert was a graduate of Mount Union College in Alliance, OH and received his Master's Degree from New York University in 1947. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War, and retired in 1971 at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn H. Bennett; children, Barbara Bennett, Tracey Bankhead and husband, John, and Robert 'Chip' B. Bennett, Jr. and wife, Terri; grandchildren, Will Finocchio and wife Melissa, Ann Mefferd and husband, Andrew, Jake Bankhead and wife Audrey, Ben, John, and Barbara Bankhead, Robert B. Bennett III and Emma Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Hudson, Bennett and Dylan Finocchio.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 20 at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, 1209 Hampton Highway, Yorktown with The Rev. Dr. Michael Condrey officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
The family is especially appreciative of the special care Robert received at The Chesapeake Health Care Center.
