He was born in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, July 9, 1938 and was a native of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. After graduating Har-Brack High School in 1956, he began a distinguished and decorated military career, retiring from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1979. Since that time, Paul has called Hampton, Virginia home. After retiring from active duty he worked several more years as a Civil Servant before combining his true passion, golf, with employment at the Langley AFB Golf Course. Paul was an active member and served as a deacon for several years at Buckroe Baptist Church. Besides being an avid golfer, he enjoyed the simpler things in life such as cookouts, ball games and anything involving his wife, children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Helen Cowan; his brother, John Cowan; and daughter, Sherri Bookman.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Midge; sons, Paul (Liza) and Brett (Trish), son-in-law, Ron Bookman; grandchildren, David (Eugenia), Chris (Amanda), and Matthew Cowan, and Jennifer Leroux (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Annalisa Cowan and Blake Leroux; brother, Fred Cowan; and sisters, Virginia 'Deed' Czekalski (Robert) and Mary Kurtiak (Dave).
Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at Buckroe Baptist Church, 1819 N. Mallory Street, Hampton, Virginia 23664. Services will be officiated by Pastor Kevin Schrum at 5:00 pm, concluding with full military honors provided by Langley AFB Honor Guard.
