Myrtle W. Gwaltney

She was born on May 20, 1928 in Conway, North Carolina, daughter of the late Jack Wheeler and Gertrude Davis. She was a resident of Hampton, Virginia for most of her life and retired from NASA with over 30 years of service.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her first husband of 30 years, Alton M. Yates Jr.; second husband of 24 years, Charles A. Gwaltney; two brothers, and four sisters.

She is survived by her son, Alton M. Yates III and his wife, Joyce of Hampton, Virginia; granddaughter, Amy M. Smith and her husband Brandon of Chesapeake, Virginia; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Declan; special niece, Linda Arthur of Hughesville, Pennsylvania; and several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 25, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 11:00 AM at Parklawn Memorial Park.
