Mavis Olette Ferk went to be with our Lord on January 10, 2024. Her beautiful, loving spirit touched the hearts of everyone she met. Mavis was born in South Dakota on May 2, 1926. That is where she met her true love, Roger Ferk, when his father was assigned a preaching position in her small town of Kidder, South Dakota. Roger was in the army and served four tours in Germany. Three of their five children were born in Germany. They enjoyed a life together for seventy-five years before Roger passed in 2021.
During World War II, Mavis was a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse teaching children that spanned many grades. She was a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church and considered all the members her family. She was also a member of TOPS VA 0322 Hampton and enjoyed their continued support and friendship. In her last years, she continually spoke of God's love and sang "He walks with me and talks with me and tells me I am His own". Those words gave her comfort as they comfort her family and friends today.
Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Sergeant Major Roger Duane Ferk; son, Don Lee Ferk; mother, Hannah Elisabeth Haagenson Trygstad; father, John Odean Trygstad; one sister and four brothers; son-in-law, Lee Godley and daughter-in-law, Cindy Ange Ferk.
Those left to remember her giving and loving spirit are her daughters: Donna Lynn Wood (Tony) and Karan Joy Godley; sons: Jay Wayne Ferk (Cindy Hemler) and Wade Duane Ferk; grand children: Tonja Wight (Philip), Ryland Wood, Jason Ferk (Michele), Danny Ferk (Sarah), Duane Neraal, Jeremy Ferk, Christina Starnes (Chadd), and Angela Godley; great-grandchildren: Macey Starnes, Maddison Starnes, Sophie Neraal, Sarah Neraal, Shelby Neraal, Remington Ferk, and Trevor Ferk; sister, Nila Carpenter (Buddy); along with multiple nephews and nieces.
Family and friends are invited to visit and share memories of Mavis at a luncheon held at Hope Lutheran Church, 1112 Todds Lane, Hampton VA. 23666, from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM. The church service will begin at 1:15 PM. Interment will immediately follow the service at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
