Matt was born June 3, 1958 in Stuttgart, Germany to Lt. Col. John Patrick McQuade and Irene Schneider. Matt met his wife Cathy when they were 12 years old at the Briar-Queen pool in Hampton. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1976. Matt worked at Newport News Shipyard for 32 years as an outside machinist X43.
Matt loved his family and adored his grandchildren, Chase, Dayton and Liam. They called him “Grandaddy Mac” but Liam called him “Grandaddy Smack”. He enjoyed being at his second home in Kitty Hawk, NC. Spending time with family and friends, swimming, and best of all watching that Sound side sunset. He and Cathy loved to travel. His favorite vacation was to St. Lucia.
Matt never met a stranger. He was known for his “Big boy hugs” and telling stories. He was the #1 fan of the Washington Redskins. He had season tickets and as Matt always did, he would know all the other fans around him. Whenever there was a touchdown, he would stand up and say “Touchdown Washington”, put on his burgundy and gold Rastafari hat, whistling the Redskins fight song and do the Cabbage Patch Dance. He rode motorcycles since he was a kid. He was part of the biker community for a long time. Everybody called him “Daddy Mac”. He was a life member of the Old Dudes Motorcycle Club. He loved riding his Harley. He had a 1968 Harley FLH known as the “Yellow Screamer”, his pride and joy.
His passion was helping others and our community. He was a huge supporter of the Here For The Girls! and their mission and purpose to help raise funds for pre-menopausal breast cancer survivors. The survivors are affectionately called Boobers. He was a huge supporter of Habitat for Humanity PGW. He had volunteered to build homes and support their mission.
Matt is survived by his loving wife and best friend Cathy of 42 years. Son, Andrew(Mary), Mother, Irene Schneider, Brothers, Michael McQuade and Steve Marshall. Sisters Diane Slate(Arch), Brenda Parsons, Sherry Ambrose. 17 Nieces and nephews, Grandchildren Chase, Dayton, Liam, his dachshund Scooby Doo.
He was preceded by his father, Lt. Col. John Patrick McQuade, Brothers John James McQuade and Witmer N. Marshall, son John Patrick McQuade. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Matt’s memory to Here For the Girls!, 1309 Jamestown Rd. #204, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
