Mary Ann was born in Greenville, South Carolina on January 5,1943. She is the daughter of the late Rev.
Collins B. Byrd of Darlington, South Carolina and the late Hazella E. McCoy of Greenville, South Carolina.
Mary Ann’s passion in life was education. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education as well
as a Masters Degree in Reading Development from Hampton University. Throughout her 40 years in
teaching, she taught at various schools in Hampton including Aberdeen Elementary, Paul Burbank
Elementary and Cooper Elementary. She relocated to South Carolina and continued teaching for several
years before returning to Hampton where she retired from Hampton City Schools in 2009. She was also a
devout member of First Baptist Church where she served as a Deacon. She was a member of the Sigma
Gamma Rho sorority as well as a member of CHUMS. She enjoyed bowling in her spare time, as well as
shopping and traveling with her various friends and family.
Mary Ann is survived by her son, John Andre Pritchard and his partner, Maria Whitworth; her son, Kevin
Lamont Pritchard; and various family in Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama and Illinois. Her list of special
friends and confidants is numerous as Mary Ann was loving and generous to all. If she was your friend,
you knew you had a friend.
A viewing will be held Friday, May 14, 2021 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A
Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11:00 AM, also at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home followed immediately by interment. A catered reception will follow in Parklawn's fellowship hall to celebrate her life with friends and family.
