Marie married Odie in 1951 in Newport News, Virginia. She was employed by the Newport News Shipyard as an Administrative Clerk for over thirty years. Marie was a long standing member of Pine Chapel Baptist Church, she loved her church and always tried to support and help the church in any way possible. Marie was a humble gardener, she loved learning and supporting any gardening cause and was so humbled and honored to be selected as a three time recipient of the yard of the year award for the city of Hampton.
Marie "Sweetpea" had a good sense of humor and was a kind, patient, gentle spirit that was cherished by her family and friends. One special soul that will be dearly missed by all the lives she touched.
Marie is survived by her two sons, Dana Hare (Carol) and Dara Hare (Laura); brother, Robert Garner (Mae); eight grandchildren, Travis, Kristin, Aaron, Michelle, Ian, Jessi, Kelly, and Jesse; seven great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Colin, Dalton, Lena, Ellie, Gunner, Nora; and a host of beloved extended family members and all of her nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty years, Odie; her sister, Iva Dunlap; her brothers, Luther, Carley, Charlie, Lenny, Otis and Billy Garner.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all of the medical staff and particularly her daily companion for their loving care and kindness to Marie and her family.
A graveside service for Marie will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in her memory to Pine Chapel Baptist Church, 1544 West Queen Street, Hampton, VA 23669.
