She was born October 25, 1921 to George Darius Jackson and Lucille Ewers Jackson at Elon in Amherst County. She has been a resident of Newport News since 1957.
Mrs. Patterson was a graduate of Madison Heights High School, Class of 1938, a member of the National Honor Society, and attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg. She worked for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia in Lynchburg and Norfolk before choosing to become a homemaker in 1953.
She was a longtime active member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, having served as ruling elder, librarian, moderator of the Women of the Church, and in many other capacities. She was a charter member and past president of the Edgewood Garden Club, a Friend of the Verizon Telephone Pioneers of America, and a charter member, past president, and 50 year member of Chapter AG, Virginia of the International P.E.O. of Sisterhood.
Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her husband of almost 43 years; her parents; her sisters: Virginia Jackson Gunn and Helen Jackson Liphart; her brothers: Glenn Wesley Jackson and Ray Emerson Jackson; and one nephew: Ray Emerson Jackson Jr.
She is survived by her two sons and their wives: Stewart Preston Patterson (Rubette Nott) and Darry Edward Patterson (Laurie Marshall); four grandchildren: Preston Stewart, Christine Marie, Shawn Edward (Kera), and Connor Marshall Patterson; one niece: Margaret Gunn Jones of Reidsville, NC; five nephews: Edwin Anthony Gunn of Martinsville, VA, Cary Hatton Liphart of Punta Gorda, FL, Robert David Liphart of Hiram, GA, Alan Jackson Liphart of St. Augustine, FL, and Brydon Darius Jackson of Fayetteville, NC.
A graveside service for Margaret will be held 3:00 PM, Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23606.
