Marcus Kenneth Britt of Gloucester County, Virginia, translated to heaven on August 21, 2021, after a full and event-filled life. Born in 1934 in Tatums Township, Columbus County, North Carolina, to Marcus and Viola Britt, Ken was the youngest of six children. His childhood and young adult years were fraught with unusual adversity which he overcame, serving four years in the Air Force and working for thirty-six years as a pipe fitter in department 42x at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. In his youth, he was a rabble-rouser, but his carousing days were tempered when he met the love of his life Nancy Carol Mechanye, to whom he was married for forty-six years (Nancy translated to heaven in March 2020). Ken’s hell-raising days ended completely when he became a Christian in 1976, committing his life to serving our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was driven to deliver the Gospel message to whomever he met; as a pipefitter he worked on several submarines and aircraft carriers, working and witnessing about Jesus to hundreds of fellow workers – many of whom surrendered their lives to Christ.
A perfectionist, Ken would have made an excellent reporter for Consumer Reports because of his consummate critiquing abilities. His daughters were stumped by their inability to make the perfect bowl of grits and to find THE coffee cup for dad. Ken was never wrong, as he frequently pointed out to family and friends, exclaiming that he had been wrong once, then realized he was actually right. His sense of humor was wry, dry and quick, and he will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his brother, Donal Ray Britt; daughters, Cassandra Britt Farrell and Katrina Pearl Ramaglino; son-in-law, Travis Ramaglino; and grandchildren, Zachary and Samantha. His grits recipe is available upon request.
Ken’s viewing and service will take place at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Saturday, September 4th; the viewing will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by the service and interment at 3:00 o’clock at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
