Lee was born in Ronceverte, WV on May 12, 1925. He served in the Army during WWII and took part in the Normandy Invasion. For 21 years, Lee served in the Air Force in Germany, Texas, and finally LAFB. Thereafter, he worked for civil service in Ft. Eustis, VA and retired after spending his last 11 years in Italy and Germany.
He was a member of the German/American Club. After retirement he did a great deal of volunteer work. Throughout his life, he was active in recruiting voters to the polls. He helped to restore oyster beds and worked in various recycling projects in the Hampton Roads area. For 15 years, Lee volunteered at the NASA Space Museum’s Resource Center for Teachers. Last year in Bedford, VA, Lee received a Medal of Honor from the French Foreign Legion for his WWII service.
Lee was preceded in death by his brother, Albert of Greenville, SC and sister, Hazel, of Toledo, OH. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margot Boone; son, Dennis and wife, Marika, of Beaufort, NC; daughter, Barbara of Carson City, NV; grandchildren, Sasha, Sara, Skylar, and Elliot; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Noah, and Kaiden; sister, Joyce of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; and two brothers, Don and wife, Becky of Charlottesville, VA and Ron and wife, Marsha of Wytheville, VA.
A celebration of life will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 807 W. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton. Inurnment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
