Larry Carlton Battle was born on the November 24, 1950, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was the youngest child of Cardie and Minnie Battle. Larry graduated from Nash Central High School in 1969 and attended Durham Technical College after graduation. He worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation before joining the United States Air Force in 1974. His military career afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. Larry was assigned to the 99th Military Airlift Squadron for nine years. As a member of the 99th, he was assigned as a flight crew member to Air Force Two, serving the Vice President, the First Lady, and Congressional staff members.
Larry retired from the Air Force in 1996 and later worked as the facilities manager for the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA). During his tenure at NIA, Larry completed his Bachelor's degree.
Larry enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was active in his church, Calvary Chapel, in Newport News; and was a member of the church transportation team. Larry always made himself available to help out anyone in need. He was a very caring husband, father, and friend.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother, father, and his older brother Joseph. He is survived by his wife Doris, of forty years, his son Lawrence Battle of Yorktown, and his daughter Ericka Battle of Richmond. He is also survived by his brother James Battle (Wilma) of Richmond, his two sisters Ilene Silver and Catherine Harrison both of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, two sisters in law Daisey Murphy of Raleigh, and Linda Fowler (Verdale) of Rolesville, North Carolina, two brothers in law Claude Bennett (Edith) of Raleigh and Russell Bennett (Ava) of Clayton, North Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews and other friends and family.
