Johnie graduated from Springville High School in 1963 and made his way to Stamford, Connecticut for greater opportunities. He began working in Stamford Hospital, caring for patients. He soon met the love of his life, Ms. Betty Jean Johnson, and began a family. During the time of the military draft he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force, prior to being drafted. He then went to fight for his country in Vietnam. During the war, he was wounded, and was listed as fully paralyzed but his resilience led him to walk out of the hospital, making his way back home to his new family.
