John "Jack" Thomas Hughes III

John (Jack) Hughes, III of Newport News, Virginia passed away surrounded by his family on December 18, 2023. Jack was born August 13, 1939, to John Lester Hughes and Frances Hughes. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and retired from NASA Langley in 2001 after many years of service. Jack’s favorite things in life were his family and playing slot machines. Jack was a loving husband, Daddy, Pop-Pop and great granddaddy. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Cornelia Lucido Hughes, children; Teresa Jablonski (John), Janie Wood (Rink) and Jennifer Gilmore (Chris), grandchildren; Heather Capparra (Mike), Joshua Jablonski (Katie), Kelsey Jurist (Zack), Devon Wood (Jordan), Ian Wood, Hallie and Drew Gilmore. Also, he is survived by his pride and joy his great-grandchildren Colton, Mikey, Grayson, Max, Nolan, Mackenzie and Sammy; and a special cousin JoAnn Woodcock. Jack loved everyone he encountered and especially loved all his fur babies. He valued all his friends and neighbors and never met a person he did not like. Jack’s smile and infectious love for everyone will be missed by all. His family will hold a celebration of life on Friday December 22 from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Kiln Creek Recreation Center, 2801 Brick Kiln Blvd., Yorktown, Virginia. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Children’s Hospital of the King Daughters.
