John Randolph Carr, Jr., 80, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday morning, June 10, 2015. A lifelong Peninsula resident, he was born July 17, 1934 in Newport News, the son of John and Eunice Carr. He grew up in old Wythe and attended the 24th Street Church of Christ. He graduated from Hampton High School and the College of William and Mary with a degree in political economy.
Beloved father, grandfather, golfer, business owner, author and mentor, John was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, open mind and eternal optimism. He had a deep empathy for others (always the champion of the weak) and lived his life caring for his family.
Also known as “Bubba” by his family and childhood friends, he worked in finance early in his career in Phoenix, AZ and Charleston, WV. Returning to Hampton, he worked at Noland Company and Taylor Parker before opening a family business with his brother, Jimmy. He owned and operated Carr Supply in Williamsburg where he lived for many years, and finished his career at Walmart at the age of 80. He worked until he couldn’t and continued to take care of his family up to the very end.
Preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Whipple Carr; daughter, Rinda Crockett; grandson, Anthony Carr; and his brother, Jimmy Carr. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Tison; son, Thomas Carr and wife, Cathy of Richmond; son, David Carr of Philadelphia; daughter, Sharon Carr; daughter, Stephanie Lewis and husband Steve of California; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
