Born in Bronx, New York to Charles and Mildred (nee Tobias) Snyder, Irene was the youngest of three sisters, Mildred Ferrara and Charlotte Peterson. Irene, a fiercely loyal and compassionate wife and mother, married Lt. Col. John P. McQuade with whom she had four children, Diane Slate (Arch), Michael McQuade, Matthew McQuade (Cathy), and John J. McQuade (Karen). Irene was a military wife who travelled the world before settling in Hampton, VA, after the passing of her husband. During their marriage, Irene and John spent time in Utah; Arizona; Stuttgart, Germany; Alabama; Virginia; and Okinawa, Japan.
Irene married Whitmer Marshall and became the loving stepmother to his four children, Whitmer Marshall, Brenda Parsons, Sherry Ambrose, and Stephen Marshall. Irene, a strong and independent woman, graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor in Accounting and went on to become a CPA and establish her own firm, Irene S. Marshall P.C.. Throughout her years, she was the backbone of the family, helping many to weather difficult times. After her second husband’s passing, Irene married Morris Schneider, to whom she was married for 22 beautiful years, and was a loving stepmother to his daughter, Angie Brown.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Mildred, sisters Mildred and Charlotte, husbands John, Whitmer, and Morris, sons Matthew and John, and stepson Whitmer. Irene is survived by her daughter Diane and her children Eric Slate, Corey Slate, and Allison Decker (Patrick) (children Owen, Lillian and Evelyn), son Michael and his children Shannon Campbell (Chad) (sons Quinn and River), Patrick McQuade, Austin McQuade, and Zoe McQuade, her grandson Andrew McQuade (Mary) (sons Chase, Dayton, and Liam) son of Matthew, step children Brenda, Sherry and Stephen, 11 step grandchildren, and 18 step great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue Hampton VA, 23666, with burial to follow at at Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the John J. McQuade scholarship fund at Christopher Newport University that was set up by Morris and Irene.
